Microsoft and Alphabet Report: Both Clouds Accelerate, Markets Split on Cash Burn - UPDATE
The earnings previews are now actual results.
Microsoft beat targets with sales up 19% to $92.3 billion, and Azure grew 48% to $33.17 billion.
CFO Amy Hood guided Azure growth to 49% to 50% in Q2.
Customers with 50,000 or more Copilot seats rose 8x year over year, and daily Copilot users are up close to 50% quarter over quarter.
Commercial remaining performance obligations rose 73% to $677 billion.
Roughly three-quarters of the $45.2 billion in capex went to short-lived assets such as chips and networking gear.
Alphabet's cloud numbers were stronger, but the rest of the quarter was not.
Google Cloud grew 103%, earning $11.1 billion in operating income on $30.7 billion in sales.
Total revenue of $127.58 billion and adjusted EPS of $2.67 both missed consensus, the first simultaneous miss in nearly four years.
Free cash flow was negative $9.07 billion and the stock fell more than 10%.
Cloud backlog reached $561 billion, and Alphabet began using third-party compute at the end of Q3, ramping in Q4.
2026 capex guidance of $195-$205 billion is unchanged, with a significant increase expected in 2027.
Over the past 12 months, more than 2,600 customers have used at least 100 billion tokens on Gemini Enterprise.

Why it matters: Demand for hosted model capacity is still outrunning supply at both vendors, so teams planning 2027 inference budgets should expect tight capacity and pricing pressure rather than a glut.
Google Ships Gemini 4 Carbon to Cyber Defenders First, Tops Intelligence Index
Google DeepMind announced Gemini 4 Carbon on October 28, two weeks after Argon.
Artificial Analysis places Carbon first on its Intelligence Index v5.0 with 59 points, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at 58, GPT-6 Astra at 57 and Argon at 50.
The v5.0 index was published the day before and is a harder rescale, so its scores cannot be compared with older index numbers.
First access goes to a subset of cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program, ahead of developers and consumers.
Introductory pricing matches Argon at $2/$10 per million input/output tokens, rising to $4/$20 after the intro period.
The security numbers are the headline.
Google reports 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro for vulnerability discovery, 54.8% on ExploitGym and 71.0% on CWE-bench for patching, with guardrails disabled, which limits extrapolation to the safeguarded product.
The picture is more mixed elsewhere.
Artificial Analysis ranks Carbon second on two of three coding-agent components, and it trails Kimi K3.1 Pro and Muse Wonder on the AA-Briefcase knowledge-work test.
It also falls slightly short of Opus 5.5 in Claude Code for agentic coding.
Why it matters: Carbon is not available for general use yet, so the practical step is to queue it for evaluation, especially for long-running agent and security workloads, rather than switching production traffic.
GitHub Copilot Fusion Goes GA, Routing Across Models at Roughly Half the Per-Task Cost
At Universe on October 28, GitHub made Copilot Fusion generally available.
It is a runtime model router and orchestrator that chooses models and execution patterns for a task, then returns a single response.
Patterns are single-model, cascade (a cheap model drafts and a judge accepts or escalates) and critique (multiple models review a draft in parallel).
The router chooses among models from Anthropic and OpenAI, including Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol.
In Artificial Analysis testing, Fusion Max averaged $5.59 per task against $11.42 for Claude Code on Opus 5.5 Max, about 51% less, while finishing two points behind on the Coding Agent Index.
It also used about half the tokens per task.
On billing, each model Fusion uses is billed at its standard rate, with a limited-time 30% discount on model costs for paid Copilot plans.
The discount runs through November 30, 2026.
It is available in VS Code, the Copilot app, Copilot CLI and JetBrains IDEs.

Why it matters: Multi-model routing is becoming a default product feature, and teams hand-tuning model choice per task now have a vendor-managed baseline to benchmark against.
Key Developments
Anthropic Details Unreleased Model That Chained Bugs Into Exploits Across Five Platforms
On October 27, Anthropic's Frontier Red Team published a paper on an internal, unreleased model asked to produce exploit chains for Chrome, Safari, Windows, Linux and Google's Pixel 9.
Chrome alone accounts for 62 CVEs, all critical or high, patched as of Chrome 156.
The Linux chain is the most serious, giving a remote attacker root on servers running a multipath TCP listener.
Anthropic says the notable part is a single model finding several separate flaws and combining them, work that until now took a few specialist teams.
Treat the autonomy claims with caution.
Vendor acknowledgments corroborate specific discoveries, but the model's autonomy is independently unverified, and reporters found unresolved discrepancies between Anthropic's Windows and Linux descriptions and public CVE records.
Impact: Patch browsers and Linux kernels promptly, and expect patch windows to shrink as Carbon-class and Anthropic-class models both target vulnerability discovery.
Oracle Investor Day Caps New Funding at $20B and Sets Path to Positive Free Cash Flow
At its October 28 investor day, Oracle projected revenue of at least $225 billion by fiscal 2030, a compound annual growth rate above 35%, and non-GAAP EPS of at least $21.
The more important change is financing.
Oracle plans to limit additional capital-market funding through fiscal 2030 to $20 billion, split evenly between equity and gross debt.
Capex is expected to peak in fiscal 2027 and 2028, with positive free cash flow in the second half of fiscal 2028 and at least $30 billion in fiscal 2029.
Shares rose around 11%.
Impact: For buyers with OCI capacity commitments, a funding ceiling is a signal about delivery risk, and fiscal 2028 free cash flow is the first checkpoint on whether the plan holds.
Neocloud Credit Stress Persists, With CoreWeave Swaps Near Distress Levels
CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap spread hit 1,148 basis points, up from 835 a month earlier, implying roughly a 62% default probability.
Elon Musk said debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for companies without substantial revenue independent of AI data centers, predicting heavy consolidation among the 200+ neoclouds.
Nebius distanced itself, saying it does not carry the kind of debt CoreWeave does.
Alphabet's decision to rent third-party compute, noted above, shows hyperscalers are still leaning on outside capacity even as financing for that capacity tightens.
Impact: Teams with reserved GPU contracts at debt-heavy neoclouds should review counterparty terms and keep a portable deployment path to a second provider.
Product Launches
GitHub Copilot App and Copilot Projects
GitHub unveiled the Copilot app, Copilot projects and a deeper Copilot code review tier alongside Fusion at Universe 2026.
Copilot projects run parallel agent sessions across repos, and session continuity keeps a cloud agent session synced across the GitHub app, VS Code, CLI and web.
Enterprises running agents at scale get one surface for managing sessions instead of tracking them per client.
Why it matters: Parallel agent sessions that stay synced across surfaces reduce the overhead of managing agent work, giving enterprises a single place to oversee it at scale.
Google Genie 4 (Research Preview)
DeepMind's new world model adds native audio to real-time interactive simulation, built on Gemini Omni for visual grounding and other Gemini models for reasoning.
It is a research preview for trusted testers, with later access planned for Google AI Ultra subscribers and early-access partners of the Gemini API and AI Studio.
Nothing is shippable yet, but it is worth tracking for agent and simulation training environments.
Why it matters: Interactive world models with native audio could become useful environments for training and testing agents, though access is limited to trusted testers for now.
