Top Stories

Google Open-Sources TorchTPU, Making TPUs a Native PyTorch Target

Google announced on October 20 at PyTorch Conference 2026 that TorchTPU, its native PyTorch stack for TPUs, is open source on GitHub. It was co-developed with Meta's PyTorch team and is built to run existing PyTorch workloads on TPUs with minimal code changes.

For most code the change is swapping .to("cuda") for .to("tpu"). The backend supports eager execution, torch.compile, and roughly 450 Aten ops.

Peak performance may still need tuning.

The release also covers the serving and training tools teams already run.

It works with vLLM, SGLang, llm-d, TorchTitan, Ray, TorchRec, Hugging Face, and LiteRT. In Transformers v5, a model deploys to TPU by passing device_map="tpu".

TorchTitan has been validated on up to 8,192 Ironwood TPUs, reaching 52% model FLOPs utilization on Qwen 3 8B.

It arrives one day after Amazon shipped its own PyTorch port for Trainium.

Why it matters: Two hyperscaler PyTorch backends in two days lower the cost of testing non-Nvidia hardware, so teams negotiating GPU capacity now have a credible TPU benchmark to run.

Salesforce to Acquire Braze for $5.66B to Feed Agentforce Real-Time Customer Data

Salesforce signed a definitive agreement to acquire Braze for about $5.66 billion in enterprise value, at $47.50 per share in cash.

That is a roughly 58% premium to Monday's close.

Closing is expected in fiscal 2028, pending a Braze shareholder vote and regulatory clearances.

Braze has around 2,770 customers, including Canva, HBO Max, KFC, and Venmo.

Salesforce says the real-time engagement and AI decisioning will complement Data 360, Customer 360, Agentforce, and SIForce.

The deal overlaps with Salesforce's own product.

Braze and Salesforce have been rivals, and Agentforce Marketing (the new name for Marketing Cloud) offers similar functionality. Braze is more strongly mobile-first.

Braze will keep operating under its own brand, with its CEO and leadership team joining Salesforce.

Salesforce has committed about $10.8 billion in disclosed prices to Contentful, Fin and Braze this year.

Why it matters: Marketing Cloud customers should expect a product-overlap decision before the deal closes, and Salesforce is buying event-streaming customer data to give its agents live behavioral context.

Google Launches Gemini for Government Services in Preview

Google Public Sector unveiled Gemini for government services at its Washington summit on October 20. It combines specialized skills for government staff, data connectors to common systems, the Gemini platform, and a growing set of third-party agents.

It is in preview for U.S. agencies, with HHS and Missouri among early users. Workflows include reviewing acquisition proposals, analyzing regulations, processing constituent documents, and handling FOIA redactions.

It is the third industry package after legal and financial services.

The architecture choices matter for buyers.

Gemini abstracts model choice and token costs, and decides which models and tools to use, including Anthropic models and open-weight LLMs.

Third-party agents get narrower access than Gemini, and IT administrators approve which ones are available.

Accenture Federal Services and Google Public Sector also announced Gemini launchpads, a hub of forward deployed engineers to help agencies build and scale enterprise agents.

Why it matters: Google is packaging its work agent by industry, with model routing hidden from the buyer, which shifts procurement from picking a model to picking a governed agent bundle.

Key Developments

Anthropic Draft S-1 Details - UPDATE

According to a draft prospectus viewed by The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026, up from $1.1 billion in the same period last year.

About 20% of that came from two customers.

Another report on the draft shows an $80.7 billion net loss over the same stretch, driven mainly by non-cash charges tied to its rising valuation.

Other outlets cite a higher two-customer share, so treat the exact concentration figure as unsettled.

The filing says damages from severe AI-related security events could exceed available insurance coverage.

Bloomberg reported Anthropic could go public as soon as mid-November, with marketing starting the week of November 9.

Impact: Customer concentration and the insurance disclosure are the details buyers should read, since both bear on vendor-risk reviews for teams building on Claude.

OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Extend Its Life Sciences Stack

OpenAI on Tuesday acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old AI biotech software startup. Terms were not disclosed, but the startup had reportedly raised around $20 million as of 2025.

Orchestra builds AI agents that help biotech companies manage drug discovery operations, from tracking finances to resolving clinical trial scheduling issues.

The team and technology will work on Rosalind, OpenAI's AI model for life sciences research, and the Rosalind Workbench tool, which helps researchers plan experiments and analyze results.

TechCrunch

Impact: The deal points to OpenAI building vertical workflow layers on top of its models, not only selling API access, which affects life-sciences software vendors.

Platform Model Reroutes Hit Salesforce and Gemini Enterprise Users

Salesforce's release notes show Gemini model requests were rerouted on October 20, 2026, moving 2.5-generation models to Gemini 3.5 equivalents.

The legacy Agentforce Builder gained an on/off switch to change its reasoning engine from GPT-4o to GPT-5.6 Luna on October 15. New agents created from that date default to a model selected for them.

On Google's side, Gemini 2.5 Pro was removed from the Gemini Enterprise app in the Canada and Japan in-country regions on October 20.

Impact: Teams with evals pinned to older models should re-run regression tests, because default routing is now changing under production agents.

Product Launches

Accenture Federal and Google Gemini Launchpads

Launchpads give federal agencies a central hub of forward deployed engineers to build, deploy, and scale high-code Gemini agents that connect to systems of record.

Agencies short on internal agent engineering can buy delivery capacity alongside the Gemini for government services preview.

HPCwire

Why it matters: Federal teams often lack in-house agent engineering talent, so a managed hub of forward deployed engineers gives agencies a faster path from preview to production deployments of Gemini agents.

Gemini Enterprise Custom MCP Citations (GA)

Builders can set the citation_mappings parameter through the REST API for custom MCP data stores. Gemini Enterprise then shows source citation chips when answering with tools on a custom MCP server. The feature is generally available.

This helps teams that expose internal systems over MCP and need answers traceable to a source.

Google Cloud release notes

Why it matters: Source citations make answers from internal systems easier to verify, which matters for teams that need traceability before trusting agent outputs.

Funding & Deals

Daytona Raises $60M Series B

San Francisco-based Daytona, valued at $1 billion, sells sandboxes for AI agents. These are isolated environments where agents run code, browse, and use software, with Linux, Windows, macOS, and GPU options on one platform.

Customers include Anthropic, OpenAI, Nvidia, Cursor, Cognition, Meta, and Cohere. CEO Ivan Burazin said run-rate revenue grew 25-fold between January and September.

The company says it can configure a sandbox in 60 milliseconds by pre-loading snapshots onto server drives.

Led by FirstMark Growth.

Why it matters: Sandboxes are becoming core infrastructure for agents that run code and use software, and 25-fold run-rate growth suggests demand from the major labs is already substantial.

Otter.ai Raises $320M in Non-Dilutive Growth Financing

Mountain View-based Otter.ai makes an AI meeting notetaker that has expanded into agentic workflows.

The financing is repayable rather than equity. Otter began as a consumer app, now has more than 40 million users, and aims to at least double enterprise revenue next year.

About 86% of Fortune 500 companies already have Otter users, mostly through organic adoption, and it plans to convert them into paying customers.

Competitors include Fireflies.ai, Granola and Read AI. Led by General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund.
