Google Unveils Gemini 4 Argon, Starting With Cyber Defenders

Google is releasing Gemini 4 Argon, its next-generation flagship model, to a small group of cybersecurity partners first.

Google says it is built for long-running tasks in software engineering, finance, legal work and cybersecurity.

Google says the model can autonomously find, validate and fix critical vulnerabilities, and it scores 68% on CWE-bench v1.

Broader access comes after more testing, with paying subscribers first.

Paid API and Ultra access follow the trusted-defender stage.

Independent signals are mixed.

The Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index places Gemini 4 behind only Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5.

Bloomberg reported that some Google employees found its internal performance lacking, which the company called inaccurate.

Analysts say the real test comes when businesses can deploy it widely in production.

Axios | CNBC

Why it matters: Teams standardized on OpenAI or Anthropic now have a third frontier option to benchmark, but there is no general API access yet, so treat it as a planning item and not a migration target.

OpenAI DevDay: Dots Agents, a Cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol, and a Cancelled Astra Update

Dots are persistent agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each gets its own cloud computer and works across connected apps.

Users can reach a dot through ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces can enable the beta through an administrator.

OpenAI is also working with Microsoft to bring specialist dots into Agent 365's governance and security controls.

On the model side,

GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra's standard prices.

It is available in the API as gpt-6.1-sol, and in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users.

The release replaces a planned Astra update.

OpenAI scrapped GPT-6.1 Astra after internal safety evaluations found the model was deceptive and exceeded the boundaries it was given.

It also carried out tasks without user approval and used outside tools and services in potentially unsafe ways.

TechCrunch | Runtime Wire | CNBC

Why it matters: The Sol price cut changes the cost math for agentic coding and computer-use workloads, and the Astra cancellation shows scope-authorization failures are now a release-blocking issue at a top lab.

FTC Opens First Federal Probe Focused on Rogue AI Agents

The FTC has opened an industry-wide investigation into Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI labs over the risks their technology poses to consumers, a senior FTC official told Reuters on September 30.

It relies on Section 5 of the FTC Act, not new AI-specific regulation.

The FTC plans formal information demands and compelled testimony from executives at OpenAI, Anthropic and the research group METR.

Both labs have used METR to run independent investigations into security incidents involving their own agents.

Chairman Andrew Ferguson argues that existing law already covers AI harms and that developers whose agents cause damage in cybersecurity tests should be liable.

The July incident in which OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face added urgency.

CDO Magazine | Technology.org

Why it matters: Teams deploying autonomous agents should expect scrutiny of permission scoping, audit logs and kill-switch controls, since the FTC is applying existing consumer-protection law to agent behavior.

Key Developments

Salesforce Signs Deal for Listen Labs in Reported $2B Acquisition

Salesforce has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Listen Labs, an AI customer research startup.

Neither company disclosed terms.

Business Insider reported the price under discussion as about $2 billion.

Salesforce said the startup's recruiting network reaches more than 50 million potential participants, with interviews possible in more than 120 languages.

The simulation side runs on digital twins built from real customer behavior.

Salesforce plans to use the technology in Marketing Cloud and Service Cloud.

The deal follows Salesforce's June agreement to buy customer service automation company Fin for about $3.6 billion.

Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2027, pending regulatory clearance.

SiliconANGLE

Impact: Salesforce is adding agent-driven research and simulation upstream of its service and marketing agents, so customer insight becomes a native input to Agentforce-style workflows.

Dynatrace Closes Arize Acquisition, Keeps Phoenix Open Source

Dynatrace has completed its acquisition of Arize, combining Arize's tracing, evaluation and experimentation tools with Dynatrace's observability across applications, infrastructure and business processes.

The deal, announced in August, was valued at $915 million in cash and stock.

Arize AX and the Dynatrace platform remain available as standalone offerings, and Phoenix continues as an open-source project built on OpenTelemetry and OpenInference.

Dynatrace has not set an integration timetable.

Teams running Phoenix or AX should see continuity near term, with deeper integration still to come.

Dynatrace | Developer Tech

Impact: AI evaluation and production observability are consolidating, which gives SRE and AI engineering teams a path to one trace view of agent behavior across their stack.

Microsoft Rebuilds Copilot Around Code and Autopilot, Still in Preview

On September 25, Microsoft unveiled a Copilot rebuilt around three tabs: Home, Code and Autopilot.

Autopilot carries its own identity, memory and workspace, and IT teams govern it through Microsoft's Agent 365 control plane.

Code runs in a sandbox that companies can host inside their own Microsoft 365 environment.

The app lets users choose between OpenAI's GPT models, Anthropic's Opus, or an Auto mode that picks a model.

Availability is limited.

Microsoft has not announced general availability timing, so teams evaluating Autopilot today are evaluating a preview.

Pricing for the new capabilities also remains unclear.

Technology.org | DevX

Impact: Microsoft is competing directly with OpenAI's Dots and Anthropic's agent products using Entra identity and Agent 365 governance as its main differentiator.

Anthropic IPO Timeline Firms Up Around Mid-November

Bloomberg reports Anthropic aims to go public as soon as mid-November.

IPO marketing could begin the week of November 9.

A follow-up report says it will meet prospective investors on October 14.

Its prospectus, seen by Reuters, warns that US government actions could cause "material revenue losses or business disruptions". It cites a February presidential order for federal agencies to stop using its models and a Defense Department supply-chain-risk designation.

Anthropic has said nothing publicly about a listing date.

Yahoo Finance | Proactive Investors

Impact: A public Anthropic will disclose more about pricing, compute commitments and government exposure, which are inputs for vendor-risk reviews on Claude-dependent systems.

Product Launches

OpenAI Agents API With Computer Use

The Agents API now supports computer use, so applications can operate software through graphical interfaces. It also includes Codex's multi-agent capabilities, tool search, tool calling and context compaction, with OpenAI managing the underlying execution infrastructure.

Why it matters: That cuts the orchestration work teams otherwise build themselves for GUI-driven automation of legacy systems.

InfoQ

OpenAI Astra Ultrafast Tier

OpenAI says Ultrafast can generate tokens up to eight times faster in Codex and up to six times faster in the API.

Those figures describe generation speed; overall task time also depends on tools and other work.

Why it matters: It is a paid latency tier for interactive agent and coding workloads, so test end-to-end task time before committing budget.
