Reflection AI Preps First Open-Weight Model, With More Western Releases Due This Month

Axios reported on October 4 that Reflection AI is preparing to release its first open-weight model.

The model is expected to trail the most advanced US frontier models at first. It should be competitive with the top Chinese open-weight systems, and capable enough for companies to build their own proprietary, low-cost AI on top of it.

Axios sources say other Western open-weight models are due in October as well.

Reflection hasn't named the model, given a ship date, or published a model card or benchmarks.

The release is part of a larger enterprise pitch.

Reflection says it plans to release model weights, publish research papers, and open-source software for customization.

Its stated goal is an "AI factory": a package of models, software, compute and engineering that lets a government or business build an AI system around its own data and deployment requirements.

Reflection is valued at $25 billion and has more than $7 billion of SpaceX and Nebius compute committed.

Why it matters: Teams that need self-hosted models but can't use DeepSeek or Qwen for security or procurement reasons may soon have a US-origin option, though nothing is benchmarked yet.

Super Intelligence Force - UPDATE: Jay Clayton Named AI Czar, Full Leadership Roster Revealed

The task force announced last week now has a named leader and a defined mandate.

President Trump named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to lead the Super Intelligence Force.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon CTO Emil Michael and OPM Director Scott Kupor will lead it alongside Clayton, with a direct reporting line to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

The czar post had been vacant since March, when David Sacks left.

The charter sets the timeline and the scope.

The task force will create plans to handle AI-enabled threats, streamline breach notifications and improve government response capacity, while aiming to avoid overregulation.

It has 120 days to assess AI's risks and opportunities and establish the scope of federal responsibility.

Three vice chairs will handle liaison with AI companies, outreach to critical infrastructure providers, and consumer interests.

Ferguson's seat is notable because the FTC is also running its own probe of AI labs.

Why it matters: The task force's audit of breach-notification and incident-response channels could produce the first federal reporting expectations for AI-related incidents, so compliance teams should track its 120-day report.

OpenAI to Test Visual Ads Alongside ChatGPT Image Generation

In a blog post Monday, OpenAI said it will begin testing a new ad format later this month, with US users first.

The ads will appear when users generate an image with ChatGPT Images.

Paid subscribers stay ad-free.

If the format expands globally, advertisers could reach ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users.

The measurement stack is as notable as the format.

OpenAI is adding tools to measure whether ads lead to purchases or other conversions. It is also developing brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.

It is working with AppsFlyer on attribution.

Why it matters: Marketing and ad-tech teams get a new conversion-measured channel inside a major AI assistant, and ChatGPT's role as a paid media surface is becoming a planning consideration.

Key Developments

Snowflake Sets Nadella Fireside Chat for Expedition 2026, Pitches "Agentic Control Plane"

Snowflake's virtual Expedition 2026 streams November 3-5 in the Americas, with a Day One conversation between CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on bridging AI experimentation and production-scale outcomes.

Programming spans technical, go-to-market and finance tracks.

Snowflake is positioning itself as the agentic control plane that connects data, models and agents.

The positioning follows last month's zero-copy agent integration with UiPath. It also lines up with the Workday zero-copy partnership Snowflake announced in 2025, which has a joint customer webinar scheduled for October 28. The Nadella appearance suggests the Microsoft-Snowflake relationship will get more prominent billing.

Snowflake press release | GuruFocus

Impact: Snowflake customers should expect new agent-governance and data-execution announcements in early November. Teams comparing it with Databricks or hyperscaler stacks may want to hold off on platform commitments until then.

Google Begins Rolling Out Skills in Workspace and the Gemini App

Skills began rolling out in Workspace on October 5, with completion expected by mid-November.

Rapid Release domains get Workspace Skills starting October 5 and should have them by October 12. Skills in the Gemini app start October 13 for Rapid and Scheduled Release domains.

Skills in the Gemini app are available to all Workspace customers and to users with personal Google accounts.

The staggered schedule matters for admins. Scheduled Release domains will see the Workspace feature later than Rapid Release domains, so pilot groups should be set up now.

Google Workspace Updates

Impact: Workspace admins can pilot reusable AI workflows this week on Rapid Release domains, and most tenants will have access by mid-November.

Funding & Deals

Valon Raises $150M Series D

New York-based Valon Technologies, which calls itself the AI-native operating system for regulated finance, raised $150 million at a $2.3 billion valuation, doubling its last valuation.

It signed more than $200 million in contracted annual recurring revenue within six months of opening ValonOS to the industry, and one in six outstanding US mortgages is now under contract to run on it.

Its agents handle servicing tasks such as homeowner emails, payment allocation and escrow analysis. They run on structured data and deterministic actions with an audit trail.

Customers include Newrez, Carrington Mortgage Services and ServiceMac.

Ribbit Capital joined as a new investor, alongside existing investors including Andreessen Horowitz.

Led by Ribbit Capital as the new investor.

Business Wire | PYMNTS

Why it matters: Valon's contracted revenue and coverage of roughly one in six US mortgages show AI agents moving into regulated, audit-sensitive finance operations such as servicing, where deterministic actions and audit trails are required.

Neysa Raises $200M Led by Blackstone

Mumbai-based Neysa, which specializes in AI cloud infrastructure, secured $200 million.

The money is part of a larger $1.2 billion raise and will support deployment of 20,000 GPUs in India.

The company targets enterprise demand for AI services in financial, healthcare and public-sector environments.

Participants include Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, TVS Capital, Nexus Venture Partners and 360 ONE Asset.

Led by Blackstone.

Whalesbook

Why it matters: The planned 20,000-GPU deployment points to growing domestic AI compute capacity in India, which could give regulated enterprises and public-sector buyers a local infrastructure option.

PaleBlueDot AI Raises $200M Series C

Palo Alto-based PaleBlueDot AI, founded in 2024, runs a platform that combines self-owned GPU clusters, a GPU marketplace and serverless inference.

The round values it at $3.2 billion.

The company reports more than $5 billion in signed customer contracts, though that is contracted value rather than recognized revenue.

CEO Stephen Watts said it will focus on frontier labs, Neolabs and US enterprises.

Led by ComputeCore.

Unite.AI | Converge Digest

Why it matters: Another well-funded compute provider is competing for frontier-lab and enterprise demand, though buyers should note the $5 billion figure is contracted value rather than recognized revenue.
